Square Enix Acquires Eidos

It's been a long time coming, but MCV reports that Square Enix's acquisition of Eidos has finally been made official. The board has agreed to the takeover, and the transition will be made formal in a few weeks. Sources claim that Square will let Eidos continue to operate out of London and maintain its independence as a developer. The steps are going according to a joint plan from the companies released earlier this month, and the board's approval makes it that much closer to reality.



Eidos has been financially struggling for some time, and the downturn of the economy certainly hasn't helped. A hand from Square Enix has been welcome, and the Japanese publisher benefits from the deal as well. While Square is generally seen as an RPG house, acquiring the likes of Western franchises like Tomb Raider and Hitman will expand their catalog of titles.

I don't really like Square that much anymore... They've been doing a lot of shit lately.

As long as I get a new Hitman game soon, I am not fussed.

Meh, I miss the predictable PS1 days where you knew where companies stood. Somehow it was more comforting to know that SquareSoft (not Enix) made great RPGs, Eidos made the top platformer Tomb Raider, and Capcom made scary zombie games. Maybe that is too simplistic of a viewpoint, but I am comfortable with it. LOL

...and when EA made sports games.

yeah would hate to see Midway go down...and from the sounds of it nothing changes at Eidos...they keep their name, they keep their staff and they keep making games....they are just owned by someone else now...and that someone else benefits in being able to put their stamp on all Eidos titles along side the eidos stamp so they can say "yeah we do FPS's now"

I dont see that as such a bad thing really...however Squenix is not nor will it ever be as good as squaresoft could have been by itself in my mind...as RPG's are my primary source of gaming Nothing was beter than square...then they went Squenix...pissed off Nubuo and a bunch of the other Square staff....I dunno...not the same company and I hope that Eidos isnt affected in any negative siude ways like when Square and Enix merged...but from the sounds of things they get to just keep doing what they do
